Yesterday afternoon, such a beautiful fall day, and the setting VMFA's cafe with its wall of windows, had the great pleasure of sitting with Richmond's premier journalist and popular historian Harry Kollatz, Jr. to discuss my new novel The Night Doctor of Richmond. What an experience, too! Kollatz recognized all the novel's historical characters, grasped every aside and allusion, appreciated the ghostly aspects, and shared some of his own voluminous knowledge of our city's historical oddities. So glad to have met him and to have had this gratifying chat.
In exchange for my book, Kollatz swapped me one of his, Richmond in Ragtime: Socialists, Suffragists, Sex & Murder, which collects a wild and woolly series of tales from my protagonist Chris Baker's day (and which I just noticed is now for sale on Amazon for just $3.72!). I'm diving into it now, and wish I'd known of it when researching my book. I think the two make great companion pieces, too.
Kollatz clearly works fast! Already he's posted our interview online. You can read it here: https://richmondmagazine.com/arts-entertainment/the-man-the-myth/. Happy Halloween, y'all!
